Wales will take their place in the RLIF Downer World Cup 9s competition at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta, Sydney on October 18th and 19th and they are excited to take on the world’s best in this super-charged version of rugby league.
Head coach, John Kear is excited to be a part of the inaugural World Cup 9’s saying,
“All of our players and staff think it’s a great opportunity for us to compete with the world’s best and showcase our talent. They will be interesting games against England and France, as we all know each other very well!
Wales will be sending the strongest squad possible and hope to see some familiar faces returning to the squad as they ramp up preparation for the RLIF Rugby League World Cup 2021 in England.
The squad should include two of Wales most capped and most prolific try scorers in Rhys Williams and captain, Elliot Kear both playing in the Super League with London Broncos. In addition, the St Helens flyer, Regan Grace will light up the tournament and Wigan’s, Ben Flower and Salford’s Gil Dudson will add the power and some mobility. Also likely to be included is new Huddersfield Giants recruit, Chester Butler – the grandson of one of Wales’ greatest ever players Colin Dixon.
They should also include a couple of players with local pedigree as both Lloyd White and James Old are currently playing in Australia.
“We will be sending our strongest possible squad which has a great balance between youth and experience and has an average age of 25 years. Great for the 9’s competition and superb preparation for the World Cup.”
The tournament kicks off on Friday October 18th with Wales are in a pool with England, France and Lebanon.
